This January, the much-anticipated Elder Beats Drumming Circle held its first session for 2025, bringing an exciting new opportunity for Byron Bay’s seniors to come together and experience the joy of drumming. Exclusively for members of the Byron Seniors Club, this free program is facilitated by Sound Synergy’s Gareth Jones and is designed to promote wellbeing, social connection and creative expression through rhythm and percussion.
The first session, held on 28 January at the Byron Theatre, was fully booked, with enthusiastic participants embracing the vibrant energy of African drumming. Gareth Jones, an experienced drumming instructor with over two decades of teaching and performance experience, led the session. Having spent a decade in South Africa learning from Zulu elders and Ghanaian master drummers, Gareth brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to each session.
Gareth says: “Sound Synergy is delighted to be part of the Byron Seniors Club program. These sessions are designed to unite the community, offering a fun and creative outlet through the magic of African drumming. Drumming promotes a healthy mind and body while improving listening and concentration skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. The collective energy created by drumming together fosters a sense of joy, transforming the group into a vibrant percussion orchestra.”
Drumming is widely recognised for its positive effects on mental and physical health, including stress reduction, mood enhancement and increased social engagement. The Elder Beats program welcomes all Byron Seniors Club members aged 55 and above, regardless of prior musical experience. Drums and percussion instruments are provided, ensuring that everyone can participate fully.
Funded by the Byron Community Centre and through grants, these sessions are completely free for club members. However, due to high demand, registration is essential. Seniors can book for one or multiple sessions based on their availability.
