A Musical Search for Meaning and Harmony
Soul Sangeet is proud to present Seekers of Sound, the long-anticipated return to the Byron Theatre after the last concert in 2018 ended with a standing ovation and the crowd crying for more! Seekers of Sound promises a scintillating exploration of world music featuring a captivating line-up of musical “seekers” that have journeyed from near and far to share their ‘soul music’ here in the Byron Shire.
The sound will be interweaving Indian Classical music with world and contemporary influences; an intersection of traditional and contemporary. Thus the rhythms, ragas, sounds and songs that will emerge reflect the musical journey and story that each “seeker” brings.
The concert will feature the classical edge of Byron local Shivam Rath and his unique Crystal Slide; the haunting and versatile vocals of Menaka Thomas, and the percussive brilliance of internationally renowned Saptak Sharma on the Tabla. They will be joined by a top-class line up of Brisbane based talent, namely Tsoof Baras on percussion, Meg Burstow on piano, Evan Osborne on bass guitar and Melbourne-based singer and songwriter Shayne Cook on guitar.
Using a crystal ball with the unique 22 string Indian slide guitar, Shivam Rath is renowned as one of Australia’s leading slide guitarist. He combines his knowledge and experience in Yogic studies with the practice and discipline of Indian Classical Music, His deep connection with sound and the innate ability to express its depths, nuances and subtleties enables him to share a sound experience that naturally draws the listener into meditation.
An internationally acclaimed exponent of the North-Indian Tabla and famous lineage, Ajrada Gharana, Saptak Sharma’s humble and unassuming nature belies his reputation and recognition as a “torchbearer” of Indian classical music to the next generation. Although deeply rooted in the discipline of Indian classical music, he demonstrates his mastery and percussive skill in many genres of music. He brings a level of skill that uplifts and integrates the musical experience for the listener.
An Australian born singer who hails from a musical family deeply rooted in South Indian classical music, Menaka’s exploration within realms of song writing has endowed her with a unique sound, which intersects traditional and contemporary, East and West. A few years ago, Menaka nearly lost her vision. In the long journey to recovery, Menaka’s debut album My Eyes Can See was born and launched in 2019. Many of her original songs from her debut album will feature as part of this musical experience.
Seekers of Sound promises to be a night of soul stirring music, raw emotion and human connection in the next Soul Sangeet narrative cultivating world music and culture within our shire and country.
